Most people spend over half their awake time in a seated position. Even if you dedicate 30 minutes per day of physical activity, it is always crucial to interrupt sedentary behaviour with a few minutes of movement frequently throughout the day.

Avoid sedentary behaviour at all ages

When we spend time in a Sedentary behaviour, our larger muscles do not use as much glucose, the body’s primary source of energy. Uninterrupted sitting can cause an increase in blood sugar levels, triggering the release of insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar. Gradually, sedentary behavior such as sitting can cause the body to become less sensitive to insulin and the resulting insulin resistance can lead to inflammation.

Increased sedentary time is associated with increased risks for obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cancer, and metabolic syndrome (health conditions that include abdominal obesity, unhealthy cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, and high blood sugar). The silver lining is that reducing sedentary time by an hour a day is shown to counteract the harmful effects of inactivity.

The one-hour reduction each day doesn't have to be accumulated at one time, it can be short periods of movement throughout the day. The key is to interrupt your sitting time with an activity that will get your heart and your lungs pumping, and something that would also benefit your mental or emotional health.

Here are some tips to get you started

  • Set a timer each hour reminding you to take an active break.
  • Take an active break during commercial time.
  • During you active breaks you can walk to kitchen to get a glass of water, dance, stretch, march in place, or do some household tasks.
